In the second part of our series Learn Arabic words and phrases: Months in Arabic we will continue where we left off at the last article , by getting to know more about two more kinds of calendars that would help in the journey to learn Arabic words and phrases, as they are still used until the present day in Arabic speaking countries. Those two kinds are the Hebrew Calendar and the Coptic Calendar.

The Arabic names for months in the Hebrew calendar

This calendar is also a calendar that is based on the solar cycle and is currently synchronized with the Gregorian calendar. Similar to the previously discussed calendars, it is made up of 12 months. It was used by the Arabic speaking world before the rise of Islam and is still used in news and media to this day.

In order to learn Arabic for practical purposes, you need to recognize how these months are written and pronounced in Arabic since some Arabic speaking countries like Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan and Iraq still depend on them.

The Arabic names for months in the Coptic calnedar

The Coptic calendar is the oldest calendar known in history, although its date of origin is still a mystery. The ancient Egyptians used this calendar for agricultural purposes and to this day, farmers still use it. The year is divided into 3 seasons; each season is made up of four months: the season of the flood, the season of vegetation and the season for harvesting. There’s a short month of 6 days at the end of each year that is reserved for feasts after the harvest.
