Miracles in the Quran

Dina Essawy

03 Sep 2018

Aside from being one of the three holy books known to man, the Quran is known to be a miracle in and of itself. The text itself does not conform to the standard rules of Arabic prose or poetry, since it is the word of Allah.

"If mankind and the jinn gathered in order to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could not produce the like of it, even if they were to each other assistants." [Al-Isra, 88]

Many of the prophets mentioned in the Quran have either encountered or instigated situations that were deemed supernatural; none more so than the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) encountered many difficult circumstances in his efforts to spread the word of Allah and bring peace to all those he encountered. Prophet Muhammad was continuously disbelieved by the people of Mecca. When they challenged him to perform a miracle, he was inspired by Allah to point to the moon, which split in half in front of their eyes. It was such an incredible phenomenon that everyone attributed it to 'magic'.

"The Hour has come near, and the moon has split [in two]. And if they see a miracle, they turn away and say, "Passing magic." [Al-Qamar, 1-2]

Another very well-known miracle attributed to Prophet Muhammad is the miracle of Isra and Miraj. Shortly before migrating to Medina, the prophet PBUH undertook a journey with the Angel Gabriel from Mecca to Jerusalem in a very short period of time, which was deemed impossible. From Jerusalem, Muhammad ascended to the heavens in what is called Mairaj where he held communion with Allah.

"Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al- Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing." [Al-Isra, 1]

Since Prophets are closest to Allah, it would make sense that their prayers are almost always answered. During a period of severe drought, Muhammad's companions beseeched him to implore Allah to send rain and when he began praying to Allah it started to pour and this went on for seven days until they implored the prophet (PBUH) to ask Allah to stop the rain. As soon as the prophet (PBUH) did this, the rain stopped and the sun immediately began to shine.

The tradition of praying for rain is still performed to this day in many Muslim countries.

Learn Quran: Surat Al Bakarah

Surat Al-Bakarah is the second and longest chapter or surah in the holy Quran. It has 289 verses, 6,201 words and 25,500 letters. Its name ‘Al-Bakarah’ means The Cow. The recitation of Surat Al Bakarah has many benefits for Muslims, the most important of which is that Surat Al Bakarah protects those who recite it from the devil and the evil eye. It is known to ward off the devil from the house in which it is recited for three days.
